Current Research/ Evaluation Projects
The ASPIRE initiative will assist up to seven selected states with integrating state policy, program and funding infrastructures to expand evidence-based employment services for people with a disability resulting from mental health conditions. The goal is to increase competitive integrated employment for this population.

ICAP – Homelessness: The 5-year study is a randomized controlled trial of IPS services versus usual employment services for recently homeless adults living in permanent supportive housing programs run by the PATH program in Los Angeles.
The IPS Center is providing the training and supervision. Researchers at Westat, Columbia, and University of Southern California are conducting the evaluation.

IPS Justice system in Baltimore: The IPS Department of Justice study is a program evaluation involving a new IPS team located in the Baltimore mayor’s office that will outreach to substance use disorder clinics to provide IPS services to people who have justice system histories as well as substance use disorders. They may have past histories or current involvement in diversion, probation or parole programs. The IPS Center will provide training and supervision.

IPS Mexico: Researchers from Mexico and the United States are collaborating with the National Employment Service and the Center for Comprehensive Care in Long-Stay Mental Health to bring Individual Placement and Support (IPS) services to people with serious mental illness in Jalisco, Mexico. The comprehensive care center is the largest mental health clinic in Jalisco, serving around 5,000 people.
The project team will consult with different stakeholder groups to adapt IPS training and tools for the local context while maintaining the core components. Ongoing IPS training for staff will combine in-person and online methods.
A randomized trial will compare employment outcomes between participants receiving IPS versus standard services over one year. The study will evaluate IPS implementation by monitoring participation, service quality, and identifying facilitators and barriers.
Finally, the team will estimate resources needed to scale up IPS across Jalisco’s mental health system. The goal is to successfully adapt IPS and demonstrate improved employment for people with serious mental illness through this collaboration.

IPS Global Research Network: The Global IPS Research Network aims to establish a community of scholars and partner institutions that contribute to the knowledge base and understanding of employment and
education as social determinants of mental health. While this group places a special emphasis on implementing and scaling up Individual Placement and Support (IPS), it also seeks to promote applied research that examines broader topics within this context.

Supported Employment Demonstration (SED): The Supported Employment Demonstration (SED) is a randomized controlled trial of evidence-based vocational and mental health services. The study goals are: (1) successful employment, (2) improved mental health, and (3) reduced demand for Social Security disability benefits.

The Autism project will seek information from about 30 IPS employment specialists who have been serving adults with autism for at least one year. The goal is to understand needed emphases or adaptations to the IPS approach prior to conducting a pilot study.

IPS Young Adult Project: Helping Young Adults Succeed at Work and School Through IPS Supported Employment
This mixed-methods cohort study will evaluate the effectiveness of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) for 150 young adults (aged 16-24) with psychiatric disabilities enrolled in 10 IPS programs located in 5 different states. The research team will evaluate employment and education outcomes over a 12-month period following enrollment into IPS. We will also conduct qualitative interviews with state leaders, IPS team leaders, and young adults. States participating in the study were chosen from among the 24 states in the IPS Learning Community. The IPS Young Adult Network, a “mini-learning community” within the larger IPS Learning Community, will advise the research team and facilitate mutual support and shared learning among IPS programs serving young adults. The Young Adult Network will meet regularly during the 3-year project period, including two in-person meetings, to discuss the lessons learned from offering IPS to this age group. The study will also assess the feasibility, reliability, and validity of a new fidelity scale, the IPS-Y, which is an adaptation of the IPS Fidelity Scale with an additional focus on supported education. We will disseminate findings from the project in newsletters, learning community calls, conferences, and professional journals
