The IPS Course for Peer Specialists
This one-unit course was developed for peer specialists who want to know more about IPS supported employment. IPS stands for individual placement and support. It is a type of supportive employment program that is based on evidence. Research has demonstrated that individuals who receive IPS services are more likely to obtain competitive, integrated employment (regular jobs in their communities). Further, IPS has been more successful in helping individuals retain those jobs overtime.
The course covers the following topics:
- How competitive, integrated employment can help individual individuals in their recovery.
- How to help individuals consider the possible role of employment in their lives.
- How peer specialists can provide support to people who are returning to work, or working for the first time.
- The eight IPS practice principles.

This course does not certify peer specialist to provide IPS services. But at the end of the course, those who finish can print/save a copy of a certificate showing that they completed the course. Peer specialists who want to become certified IPS specialists must meet the following requirements: High school diploma plus at least three years’ experience as a peer specialist with a program that helps people find regular employment in local businesses OR at least two years education post high school and at least two years’ experience as an IPS peer specialist.
